Is Replacing the Fan Clutch Easy? 200

Hi,
I have a 1985 245ti with a non funtioning fan clutch. I can have the shop do it for $200 or I could do it by myself for $53.90. I have already posted the things the shop told me and I don't want it in there one minute more than it has to be. I have a bentley manual and I have done many minor things like the intank fuel pump, overdrive solenoid, control pressure regulator, and the new radiator and thermostat. The bentley tells how to remove the fan, but how do you remove the fan clutch and re install it? Thanks

Charles

Once you have the fan and shroud out, this is a good time to inspect and clean the radiator fins.

Yes, once you remove the entire fan (be prepared with some vice grips and
some P'blaster) all that's left is to remove the retaining nuts (I believe
there are six or eight) and the blades come right off the clutch.

Of course I've found that I have to remove the fan shroud as well to get
the fan out... just the price you pay for having an intercooler I guess. ;-)

Dead simple - four 10mm nuts on the clutch-to-water-pump flange, and two screws at the top of the fan shroud. Fan/clutch and shroud will then lift up and out as a set. Swap the fan to the new clutch, and reassembly is the reverse of removal. Be sure to properly seat the lower shroud tabs in their seats at the bottom of the radiator.

Hardest part is removing and refitting the drive belts and hub. I never seem to develop anough slack at the alternator adjustment to easily remove the belts.
Everything else is pretty straight forward.

10mm box wrench is used to remove the fan/hub assembly. You'll need to me a bit handy there because it is a close fit to get your hand in between the nust and the fan shroud. If you happen to have one of those rachet type box wrenches, this is about the only place on the car I found that would come in handy (which is why I have not yet bought a set of those)

I use a piece of cardboard to cover the backside of the radiator so as not to damage it.

PS Come to think of it, I believe you don't need to remove or even slacken those drive belts nor the hub. I must have been thinking that because removing those 10mm nuts the hub comes off (it can, but it doesn't have to). The fan nounts on the front of the hub, so, it'll pull off without dislodging the hub anyway.

Alternatively, you may want to consider switching to an electric fan setup. Dave Barton's web page has excellent instructions on what and how to do.

Yes..you don't have to slacken belts either. 200

I've only been able to fit a 10mm open-end wrench on those nuts...the ratcheting boxes won't work and a regular box often won't fit between the clutch and the stud stub on the water pump flange. Once the clutch and fan are out it's trivial to take the fan off the clutch and switch it over to the new clutch.

Should take you all of maybe 15minutes including the time to use engine cleaner on the fan and hose it off.
