Differential Whine & Adding Oil 120-130

'68 Amazon, ~140k miles
I believe I'm hearing a whine from the differential. I thought it might
be leaking a bit (there's a healthy coat of greasy muck on the bottom).
My Haynes manual doesn't show much detail besides rebuilding the
whole unit. I removed the bolt in the back (which is only about 1/3rd
up from the bottom), and a little oil spilled out.
Can someone tell me, is that the filler hole, or the drain?
I don't see any filler near the top.
Thanks to all for help keeping my Amazon alive!

Differential Whine & Adding Oil 120-130

Patrick -
Good call on the bearings. I haven't checked yet because
it's been raining every day here (in Washington D.C.) and
I don't have a garage.
I'll check this week when it's dry.
ah, one day I'll have my own garage...

Thanks. -John

I only hear the whine when it's cold.

Drive shaft support bearing. $20.00 for a cheap one. $40.00 for a quality one. If the rubbber donut is still firm and flexible you can reuse it. R&R takes 1 hr if you know what you're doing 3 if you don't. YOu can pull the B with a block of wood and a heavy hammer although a press would be nicer. Garage should not charge more than 1 hr. These Bs whine when they're cold but fail without warning when they are hot, usually at highway speeds and it's not pleasant. Been there, patrick.

That is the filler hole, any higher and all teh oil in the dif would slow things down. Does the whine happen when cold or hot? Intermitant or constant?
