My 1990 740 16v auto. The shifter lock button popped out a few days ago, shaft (8" long) and all. It worked okay until today. Now I can't get to go past neutral position. I'm wondering how to fix this thing. I'll check faq's but I was wondering if anyone has had this problem, and has some ideas.

I'd suggest you take it apart at the pivot in the shift lever and replace the whole unit with any shifter from a 1985-1990 740. Shouldn't be too bad to take out the whole thing as a unit. The bottom rod to the trans comes apart with a single clip similar to the window pivots in the doors (in case you've ever seen those).
