How can I move the reclining adjuster knob from one side of the seat to the other? 200 1977

I have a '77 244 that I am changing the drivers seat in. I picked up a really nice passenger seat, and I want to use that. I just swapped the whole bottom mounting bracket part of the seat (where the height adjustment is, etc...). Someone on here said that you can move the adjustment knobs from one side of the seat to the other. How is this done? I can't seem to figure it out.

Thanks.

I've done this on 86-87 style seats a couple times. The parts should be the same for the 77 seats but that is two generations of seat design back, so I apologize if there's a difference.
The first thing is to get the knob off. The center pops out after a little prying with a tiny screwdriver, and maybe some cursing. The cursing may continue while you get the retaining washer out of the center of the knob. It's got 4 fingers in the middle that lock down against the square shaft. You'll need the small scrwedriver again or better yet a hook to bend one or more of those fingers back. Then the retaining washer and knob pull off the shaft.
After that, if I remember right, you pull the shaft out of both seat pivots. The crossbar is splined to both so they rotate together. I think you'll have to have one pivot unbolted from the frame completely. You'll see once you have the seat this far apart.
I was able to rebuild my seats with an evening's work in my living room. You should have similar success.

I've done a 79 and an 84. The hold-down clips were different and required different popping-off/straightening procedures, but overall the assemblies were the same. The 79 had a press-on clip that I was able to drive back on nice and easy using a 1" socket and gentle tapping.

Make sure you don't let one pivot mechanism adjust relative to the other one while the connecting rod is out. If that happens, the sides of the seat back won't be parallel when you put the whole thing back together.

While you've got the seat out, now is the time to replace any springs or grid wires on the bottom cushion, or even (a trick recommended by others here) insert a square of carpet on top of the wire grid to beef up a tired cushion.

good luck.

Yeah I should have mentioned the carpet repair, as well as making sure the seat grids are intact.
When you have 2 seats there for parts, you can usually piece together a single good seat. Make sure all the grid wires are hooked on, and also the "bed springs" in the corners and sides. I can't tell you how many springs I've found on the floor under the seat, or in one of my cars, they were in the glovebox! "Hmm this looks important, better save it."
And nylon tie-wraps are great for replacing the bent wire "hog rings" Volvo used to assemble the upholstery to the foam and frames.

I guess the '77 seats must be a different design, because I sure could not figure out how to get the knob "clip" off.

Here's a picture of the drivers seat (which was identical to the seat I put in)

Drivers side, this is where the knob went.

This is the other side.
