Why is my battery light coming on? 200 1991

When I accelerate, the light goes off. When I am in slow traffic, the battery dashlight light comes. Any idea?

Mine does/did that too. Is there a higher amp alt. available? 200 1991

It only surges/flashes when the blinkers are on at night. I had the voltage regulator replaced at a rebuild shop. My alt just wasn't putting out the juice. It still blinks with the blinkers but you really have to look at it it's sooo dim, now that I replaced the regulator. Anyone know of a higher amp replacement that will drop in?

Might be the voltage regulator, which is located in the back of your alternator. The voltage regulator has carbon brushes which ride on slip rings and hence wear out. The carbon brushes on my voltage regulator wore out at 168,000 miles. The symptom was a faint battery light comming on (which I ignored, since the indication was not strong). Apparently the worn carbon brushes were still making some contact with the slip rings, but not enough current flow to maintain proper voltage and I ended up running down my battery and getting stranded this past winter..... hope this helps.

Phil, When mine was starting to out before I really knew what it was I also noticed that my dash lights would flicker at nite and the headlights doing the same thing. Smart point bringing that up!
