The flames 444-544

Are done! Peeled the masking tape off last night at 8PM. I managed to get enough stuff bolted back on to be in the local parade this morning. I probably put in 70 hours last week getting this done (well, it's never done is it?) Here's some pictures like I promised. Now don't you all go and do this. I want mine to look different!

Damn Bob.... amazing.

What a monumental project for such a short time frame. I can't believe you got that done... 'specially when I think of my Jag paint project, which was probably a good bit easier than yours, and it took me over two years.

I reckon you've earned a cold one or six. Enjoy!

What happened to them pics of the nice new blue interior?

-Matt

Awww shucks.. Thanks guys. Really, the work isn't all that great, there's grinder marks, waves, bubbles, paint runs etc. visible on every panel. But it's better than it was and looks pretty good from a distance (and on low-res pictures).

Well maybe so, but considering the limited time, its a project to be proud of. How about some pics from the parade though? that was the whole point of the crunch, no?

We've got some digital video of the parade. I was too busy driving to take shots with the Mavica. Maybe I can figger out how to make a jpeg come out of that Sony. I had a really old BMW convertable (1940's? maybe a 328?), in front of me and a 1940's Plymouth truck behind me. About 3/4 of the way through, the BMW started puffing white smoke and I could smell that sweetness in the air that lets you know there's antifreeze in the combustion chamber. The old Volvo never broke a sweat, never went over 185.

Bob, I'm totally impressed. The body is not even remotely similar to the 544 you picked up from Matt. The interior looks great too. Hard to believe it's the same car! Hope the parade was fun.

BODACIOUS Bob !!! Always thought of getting another 122 and doing it black with a flame job like you sometimes see on a 40 Ford coupe .....

To quote one of the true thinkers of the 21st century:

Looks great Bob...Did you paint the whole car or just add flames?

All 4 fenders off, welded in 9 new nuts where the old fender nuts had broken off. welded in new steel in rusted out holes over rear fenders. Rusty frame rail replaced with welded in section off of parts car. grind, sand, Bondo, sand, bondo, sand some more, then painted the whole car.

I had a very cool bodyman who let me do all the welding and wrenching. The guy is very good at pulling dents and using body filler sparingly... and reasonable at shooting paint. There's a few runs but from 10 ft away it looks pretty good.

Yes indeed... and, NEVER leave home without a fire extingusher in any SU carb equipped car. 'Specially a Volvo whos carbs will leak directly on the hot manifold...
