90 240 wagon spedo problem 200

the spedo on our 1990 wagon will not go over 25 mph,the the trip meter works fine.a while back some one had listed the part number or a number on the unit saying the wagon and sedan are different.is the spedo the the place to be looking or could it be the sender in the rear end.PLEASE HELP

A wagon and sedan unit are similar, but read a different number of counts per mile. The number on the front of the instrument is different between a sedan and wagon- if you want to replace it you'll have to match up the number "K9800" or "K10042".
But!~!!! If the thing works part way, here's what I think happened:
A spring, clip, or bit of plastic came adrift inside the instrument cluster, and it wedged into the speedometer. It's just preventing the needle from making it's normal travel. I bet you can remove the cluster, just turn it upside down and shake, and a loose *something* will fall out. Afterwards, the speedometer will work normally.
I saw this exact failure on a 1993 wagon once that received extensive in-dash work. Somebody lost a little spring in the cluster... everyone was scratching their head for a while.
The good news is, your odometer still works. That means basically everything's still functional and you simply need to pull it out and clear whatever's blocking the needle.
