Front brakes, rebuild or replace? 200 1988

'88 244 164K

Both front brake calipers have 1 seized piston each and are in need of fixin'.

Do I rebuild them and what is involved with that process OR do I just replace them?

I see FCP sells them for $39 ($25 core charge) anyone know if these are reliable?

I am not a novice at rotor and brake jobs, but have never done a rebuild.

Thanks,
Chuck

FWIW, I rebuilt my front calipers last year..they work fine. But, with dual pistons, it is a PITA to force them out with compressed air. Plus, by the time you pay for the seals and boots and your time and scraped knuckles, the $$ savings are minimal and it is MUCH less stressful to simply buy and install rebuilt calipers.

Consider this - the labor content of rebuilding is the same as replacement plus. I have seen some pistons while visiting a shop, and when they loose their chrome plating and start rusting and seizing, rebuilding is no longer an economic option.

I agree with John A., replacement is the only way to go.

Good Luck,

Bob

It is not that difficult to rebuild and much easier to Replace. FCP is a good if not better that average site. I have bought lots of stuff from Nick. You should Flush the entire system. FYI there is a method to bleed the lines. Do you have Bentleys Repair Manual? or another? These will REALLY help..
