83 240 tranny fluid leak 200 1983

Hi everybody. This board is one of the best things about being a volvo owner.

Well here is my problem. I noticed I have a transmission fluid leak dripping from under the tork converter. It seems to be getting worse slowly and I can't ignor the little puddle in the driveway any more.

What is leaking? How urgent is it that it be repaired asap? and does anyone have a guess as to cost? I assume the tranny would have to be pulled and I don't have the tools for that. Finnally if anyone could recommend someone who works on Volvo's anywhere near Gallup. NM I would really appreciate it. I have been here almost a year and I think the car could really benifit from a knowledgable hand occasionally.

Thanks everyone

Scott

Are you sure it's tranny fluid? Could also be engine oil getting past the rear crankshaft seal, into the bell housing, down and out. But in either case, the tranny would need to be pulled.

I'd just keep a close check on both engine and tranny levels. If the loss isn't excessive, adding some occasionally is lots cheaper than new seal(s).

Blot some fresh "droppings" with a white paper towel. Red/reddish it's ATF, engine oil won't have the red tint.

(Caveat) I saw brown ATF once, supposedly from Volvo.
