AC odor 200 1990

I've noticed an odor when I use the AC in my 1990 240. It is an earthy mold smell. I use the recirc button whenever I use the AC. The air from the vents is as cold as it has ever been. Does anyone have an easy way to eliminate the odor?

Thanks in advance.

Mold in the evaporator: see the 700/900 FAQ for tips on how to remove this.

My Jetta used to have the same problem. Initially, I set the venting to NOT recirculate, put the fan on high, and sprayed Lysol into the cowl intake. This would work for a few weeks. Then I put about 1/4 cup of bleach into a pint of water and sprayed that into the fresh air intake - never had the problem again.

It's almost impossible to keep A/Cs free of mildew.

The problem is exacerbated if your cat sleeps on your hood, so every morning your heater sucks a bunch of cat hair in.

The problem is that the only things that will (temporarily) eliminate mildew are chlorine and hydrogen peroxide, both of which are corrosive to anything metal in the air path, and they will bleach your carpet if they drip out in the cabin.

I've heard that there is a spray that you can draw in through the air intake in front of the windshield that will destroy mildue without damaging anything, but I have never found it.

I've found that turning the air flow to high on A/C, not recirculating, and spraying in something like Lysol (the mildest aroma you can find) through the air inlet helps for a while.

    Adavis,
Stop using the RECIRC. button, you are not getting any (FRESH)outside air in your car, just the same old recirc. (STALE) air. You must supply some outside vent air into your cabin to keep it fresh and dehumidified. Can you imagine how a locker room would smell without 30% outside air!

I was at the A/C shop yesterday near my house and they market a spray for removing odors from the system. i don't think they invented anything new for A/C's so why don't you try some deodizerier? Pep Boy's here carrys Ozium which is pretty effective and does more than mask odors.

      Good luck

      Steve
