Wiring the M41 1800

OK, here is my M41. I don't know which one of these electrical hook-ups is the reverse light/neutral start inhibitor and which one is the 4th gear overdrive inhibitor. Can someone please explain to me this?

You should see two switches in the top cover of the tranny. One is the back-up light, and the other is the 4th gear lock out switch.

I've forgotten exactly ---- but I think one switch is a singe tab and the other is a double tab.

The single tab switch (whatever its function) will conduct from the tab to ground (tranny case) when it's activated. That is, when it's "doing its thing."

The double tab switch will conduct between tabs when the switch is closed. When the switch is not closed, you'll have no continuity between tabs.

Using your ohmmeter, measure between tabs or from tab to ground, whatever the configuration of the switch.

One switch will conduct in reverse (only). That switch is obviously the back-up light switch.

Measure the other switch -- it should conduct in 4th gear (only). That switch is for the OD, and permits OD to work only in 4th gear.

If your tranny is a standard, it does NOT have a start inhibit switch.

    Clear?

Now I have figured it out. The tap on top with two prongs is for fourth gear overdrive. The three-prong tap is for the reverse lights. Now here is my problem, what is the third prong for?

        Colin --

I've posted the "official" Volvo schematic for a '73 ES, hoping that it's very similar to your car. Click these links for the:

        the schematic, and

        the parts list.

Note that item #102 is a switch on the gearbox (with three tabs). One tab connects to the starter switch (#45) and seat belt warning buzzer (#100). The other tab connects to the back-up lights (#50).

I cannot explain (or recall) the relationship to reverse gear, the seat belt warning buzzer, and the starter switch.

Item #31 is the tranny 4th gear enable switch for the OD (#39) and has two tabs.

That's real clear Don. I just went through this episode a few days back on the list if you recall. On your advice at that time I went out and checked the continuity, with the following results: on my 65 S M41 the right (passenger side) switch is the reverse, and the left (driver side) is the lockout.
      Hope that helps.
