Electric Fan Upgrade ? 700

car is 86' 740 GLE
and has the standard electric fan in front of AC radiator.
Later models (89 and up I think) have a larger fan.
I was at the junkyard and checked it out. The lower
mount would fit, but the upper need some re-engineering.

Question: Is it worth the effort?
Does anybody know the increase in airflow?
The newer/bigger fan looks like it has a larger electric motor.
Don't know if that is a stronger one.

Its not that I have a problem right know,
but with the smaller fan I feel so 'underpowered'. Just kidding!

But for the august heat in traffic jam it might help. Don't know.

Electric Fan Upgrade ? 700

I reply to my own post - wiered - huh!

I changed the wiring setup already. I mounted a switch
(a Seat Heater Switch fits) besides the light switches.
The wires start at the firewall, where is a connector.
And I shortened the thermostat sensor in the radiator.

So I need only to know the mechanical mounting problem
of that electric fan.
Maybe I need that glassfiber-reinforced top bracket.?
Is that big fan called 'Zirgo'? Is that the manufacturer?

The fan in the picture is the "made in Canada" Volvo 15" fan. I haven't taken pictures of the 16" Zirgo mounted in the car yet. I'll try to tomorrow just get the site update finally. Zirgo is the brand name. This fan was harder to fit in and I used 2 steel mounting brackets and drilled one hole to mount it securely.

The advantages for the electric fan are reduced fan noise and (theoretically) increased economy. The engine powered fan will provide the most cooling.

Electric Fan Upgrade ? 700 1987

I had the same thought this week when i saw a nice bigger fan in an 88 760 at the pick and pull. My fan was rusted and fried. I was midway through getting the brackets adjusted to fit my setup (as you say the bottom appears identical and the top is close) when i saw that the fan blade would end up right inside the hole that the hood latch closes into - meaning that when closed it would hit the fan blade - not good. I took of what i had so far and decided to think it through a bit first. Also the location of the bottom bracket on the 760 fan is 3-4 inches offset to one side. I may try to take this as a hint and shift the fan over to miss the hood latch. The other option is to lower it a few inches and have it hang below the a/c condensor.
The wiring on the new fan is heftier as well which has me wondering if the existing fan wiring and switch (my 87 apparently is activated by a tempsensor in the radiator only) are beefy enough for the bigger fan. The engine idle changed when i tested the fan by crossing the contacts on the temp sensor in the corner of the radiator - which gave me pause as well.

Does it really matter? That fan only comes on when the A/C is on and things are starting to really get hot.

I did THIS with my fan. I upraded the electric fan to a 16" zirgo. I haven't posted pictures of the new setup yet. Be trying to soon though.
