90' 740 automatic shifter "play"

the stick on my automatic transmission is acting weird. i suddenly have more "play" when it's in gear. it would not start the other day until i wiggled with the shifter a bit, then it started right up. any suggestions on where to start? is there an adjustment in the tunnel or from within the inside i can adjust to tighten it up? the tranny seems to shift fine in all gears.

thanks!

There are some little rubber bushings that went bad and then away on my 1990. The result was play in the shift lever. The bushings are available from the dealer for a few dollars.

Sounds like your little rubber bushing under the car has broken and possibly gone away. I made one out of some fuel line for one of my cars that did this. It worked pretty well but I replaced it with a real one from a pick a part car. Put the car up on jack stands and look at the linkage. It should be obvious where the bushing goes.

Mine was acting the same way and when I looked up at the linkage, it appeared that unless your fingers were skinny enought to stuff cotton in / take cotton out of medicine bottles, you were in for a tough time. Any tips or suggestions would be appreciated. TIA
