i would like to know if the wiring harness of a 1987 volvo 240 could be replaced with that taken from a 1988 thru 1993 volvo 240. are all the connector exactly the same.

'88 would be essentially identical (or nearly so) since both cars are LH 2.2, but you would have to be the final judge. In 89 the LH 2.4 models were introduced.

thanks for your response. a follow-up question is that, could earlier 240 model say 1983 thru 1986 with a decent engine wiring harness work on a 1987.

83 and 84, no way. 85 and 86 are LH 2.2 and very similar to the 88. Except the 85 244 turbo (no turbo harness will work).
