Robert Ludwick need some information on your compressor... 200 1990

Rob,

First, thanks for replying to my post. Second, I am curious as to the size of the 708 Kiki. Is it a direct bolt in for the 508 I have now? Does it have more "power" than the latter as well? I have substantial knowledge about cars, but my skills involving air con. are rather limited. I have been doing a ton of research in the BrickBoard archives and, as a result, was turned on to airconditiong.com -which helped me tremendously.

The price(s) offered by nostalgicair.com is/are incredible. However, I cant wait for you to to install & test. Why did you get the 708? I am guessing the the fittings on back of the compressor are the way to go? Are you going to install a condenser fan? Just a few short answers will help me tremendously -I plan to purchase ASAP...

Thanks so much, Jon

Hey Jon, I have the Sandenb 709 installed on my 240 now. the guy put fittings on the back for charge ports for me and it was an easy install, I did have to remount the AMM up about an inch to keep the suction hose from hitting when the engine twists,
The new larger compressor actually puts less load on the engine than the original one did, I can barely feel the thing dragging when getting on the freeway

The sanden websites are all messed up today, so from memory The 508 sanden is a 5 cylinder,8cu. in compressor and the 709 is a 7 cyl, 9 cu.in. compressor.
According to the diagrams and numerous people that I spoke to about a month ago, the mounting ears are the same as the 508 and the diesel kiki ( from memory again) the sanden 508 is a slightly smaller displacement compressor, and the 709 is a slightly larger displacement and more effecient compressor ( from what I have been told, they are phasing out the 508 in favour of the more efficient 709).

Until I get it on , I won't know for sure how much extra load it will put on the engine. It may not even be noticeable, or it may feel like I've thrown out the anchor, but in this climate, I really don't care,I just want that wagon cool inside.

I already had installed anelectric fan a couple of years ago, it helps a bunch.
Also a good idea to really clean the condensor fins.Hosing and air pressure are nice, but you just can't beat spending an hour or two with a dental pick and a small flat screwdriver straightening the fins and getting all of the litle rocks and bug carcasses out.

For cleaning and fixing all the little fins on the condensor I use a little plastic tool of my dads that is made for it. Called a "Fin-Comb" made by Watsco Inc of Hialeah, Florida. They're pretty old (they are my dad's), but someone has to sell them. They're about an inch wide and a few inches long, with varying numbers of teeth per inch on the comb parts, so they fit most condensors. I can't remember how many teeth per inch the Volvo condensor is, sorry. They're super easy to use and can straighten out all the bug and rock impacts in a hurry.
I never though to just do it with a really small screwdriver. Good idea.
Just thought I'd mention that these exist, might save you some time.

Actually, I have one of those, they work great for just straightening fins, but are pretty worthless for digging out the rocks etc. I've found it more effective to just hunker down and dig the junk out.
They sell those fin combs at many larger auto parts stores and all air conditioning supply houses.
