A lot of lights came on 900

Hello bricksters,
The following lights came on suddenly on my 940.

Check Engine
Headlamps
Alternator(or battery)
Brake
Park brake
ABS

When I opened the hood I found the alternator belt hanging aroung the A/C belt.
SO the alternator wasn't charging. Is it recommended to replace all 3 drive belts ? I havent done this before. How easy is it ? what tools do I need ?

Thanks

You will need a 10mm socket (I recommend deep) and 12mm & 13mm combo wrenches. It is a relatively easy operation a novice can do.

The short answer to replacement of all is MAYBE. Check the belts for any cracks, missing chunks of rubber, fraying, etc. If you are not sure, take the belts in question off and take them in to the parts store (not a bad idea to start with). Considering costs, it really isn't a bad idea to do all of them if you do not know when they last were done. They are all 3 different sizes but the P/S & ALT. belts are so close in size they can be interchanged if the parts store doesn't have one or the other.

The combo wrenches are used to loosen (not remove) various bracket bolts used to hold the accessories in question in place. The P/S unit has 2, Alternator 3, and the A/C unit 4 I think, bottom line is, if they do not move when you release tension, look for another to loosen up. The 10mm socket is for elieving tension, all 3 units have a bolt actuated tensioning bracket that should be loosened and the units will move toward the engine enough to remove the belts (a 3/8" air type impact wrench makes this operation a piece of cake). Sometimes the alternator will impede the A/C unit from loosening fully, just lift it up a bit and the A/C unit will travel as designed. Some of the bolts are best approached from below the car (lower P/S bolt, most A/C bolts) so if you still have a belly pan, you will need the 10mm socket to remove it also.

Good luck!
