Just replaced my belts (not timing belt) on my 1989 740t how tight is too tight?

The owner's manual indicates 1/4 to 3/8 of an inch belt deflection is acceptable. They don't really specify how much pressure to apply. It should not be tight like a guitar string- this will wear out bearings in a hurry.

Moderate finger pressure should depress the belt about one centimeter or so.

"moderate finger pressure" == don't press so hard your finger hurts.
