I have a 95 945 Turbo. What is the silver looking part with a round part in the middle that is just above the turbo? There is a large hose going from it to the intercooler and a small vacuum hose with a yellow stripe going across to the other side of the engine.

The part I am trying to describe can be seen here:

http://www.brickboard.com/FAQ/700-900/EngineTurboIdentification.htm

On the second picture from the top it is in the bottom right quarter of the picture with a vaccum hose rising straight up from it. On the third picture from the top it is in the top right corner of the picture with no hoses attached.

Is it a problem if some black oil/dirt has started to coat it slighly around the edge? Any maintenance required?

That's the compressor bypass valve(deja vu all over again?).
If it's leaking from the joint with the compressor housing, the gasket needs replacing; if it's leaking elsewhere, it may need replacing.
