wiring harness revisited, but not engine harness: B21FT 200 1983

The car is a 1983 244 turbo. In checking out the windshield washer motor, I noticed that the wire leading to it, plus others in the same harness, is bare or crumbling. This wiring harness goes through the driver's-side strut tower housing to the firewall and has been referred to as a fender well harness. Most posts and articles I've seen on wiring harnesses deal with the engine harness, which is replaced on this car. Can anyone tell me what I am in store for if I try to fix the wires? Connections in the passenger compartment? Any diagrams that deal with this particular harness available? Information much appreciated.

The washer pump just has one wire going to the control lever. As near as I can tell from the harness diagrams, the cable has many connections to the instrument panel and some to the center console. Probably goes to a couple of relays too. Plus all the wires get put together in sleeving with lots of other wires in the dash. It is not an impossible job but you had better know what you are doing and have plenty of down time available.

Thanks for the heads up. Do you know if it is possible to gauge the condition of wires in the passenger compartment by their condition on the engine side? I'm sure that there is likely car-to-car variability, but as a general rule. I'm wondering if I can fix things by concentrating on the sections of wires up to the firewall and leaving the inside wiring alone.

The wire degredation happens mostly around the heat of the engine, particularly on a turbo. So I would guess the exposed area of the wire is mostly where the problem would be. I would cut the black sheath up the end of the wires as far as a could to see how the wires looked underneath. If It looked ok I would just splice some new wires onto the end. The washer pump is not an essential part for driving the car anyway. Replacing the wire back to the switch would be pain. The only practical way would be to route new wires outside the main wiring bundle.
