Steffansson springs with Bilstein HD shocks? 900 1992

Hi,

I've been noticing that my 92 940T's rear end is sagging a bit. Anyways, it's 10 years old now anyways so I thought I'd replace the shocks. While I was researching the shocks, I found that Steffansson have lowering springs for the 740/940. The price is pretty competitive since I'm in Canada and eurosporttuning.com is in Canada.

Does anyone have comments about this particular combo? I'm interested in ride quality and handling. Thanks for any comments.

George

Steffansson springs with Bilstein HD shocks? 900 1992

I'm not sure about the Steffansson springs with Bilstein HD shocks combination.

But I can tell you from my personal experience with my 2 940T's (and my observation of dozens more 900/700 cars I've seen on the road) that frequently the problem is not that the back end is sagging, but that the FRONT end is slightly raised. For some reason, when the front springs on these cars get tired, they tend to RAISE ride height, rather than sag. They still get soft like you'd expect -- you get a squishy ride, and bad brake dive -- but the height of the spring actually increases! My guess is that if you replace your front springs, your ride height will be corrected.

That having been said, regardless of whether it's the front or back, ride height is predominantly regulated by springs -- not shocks & struts. So even if the problem was that the rear is sagging, new shocks would have little -- if any -- affect.

      Hi Jeff,

      Thanks for the reply.

My understanding concurs with your comment. Ride height is largely determined by the springs. A shock may contribute toward increasing the ride height (e.g., Nivomats) but not decreasing the ride height.

Your observations about the 940 front springs is very helpful. In my case, I also have a difference of about 1/2" between my left rear and right rear. This is independent of how full my gas tank is. For all these reasons, I'm thinking of replacing the springs too and lowering springs pop up because of cost and availability.

Your input is much appreciated. I'll think a bit more about these before I make my decision. I'll let the board know.

      George

FYI, replacement springs for our cars are about $35 each at www.fcpgroton.com

So for about $150 you can have new springs on all 4 corners. I did that with my last 940T, and the results were remarkable. (I'll be doing the same to my current 940T in about a month)

        Good luck.
