slow cold start on 1993 940T 900 1993

I'm still working out some bugs in my recent-acquisition 1993 945 Turbo and need some advice. It's always seemed to require one or two more cranks to fire than my old 89 NA 745. Now, on the first start in the morning, I have to crank for 3 or 4 rounds, stop, then crank 3 or 4 more before it fires. I get no codes on the OBD. Other than the starting, it runs great. Any ideas? Sorry if this problem is on the FAQ; I checked but may have missed it.

Thanks

Dave

I've had a similar problem with my 1991, 745 turbo wagon. The volvo mechanics at the local dealership have been messing around with it for the past 2.5 years and still haven't resolved the starting problem. Last week I had it serviced at another garage and had them clean the injectors with "Snap® Carb & Fuel Injection Cleaner" from Pennzoil. I haven't had a starting problem since then. Sure it's only been a week but the injector cleaning seems to have made a considerable difference immediately. I guess time will tell.

The longer than normal start is a symptom of a bad pressure regulator valve in the main fuel pump. They are cheap, and easy to replace.

Thanks, John. That makes a lot of sense. I guess it works like a check valve to keep the pressure up when the car is turned off. I'll check it out. Is the valve in the fuel pump/fuel filter assembly under the car?

Yes, the check valve is in the fuel pump under the car. It is in the discharge side of the fuel pump, between the two electrical connections. It is just a spring with a ball. Take the two hex fittings apart and you will find it. My son's 1984 760T had exactly the same symptom. Replacing the check valve cured the slow initial start of the day.
