B18 timing marks 1800

Went to set the timeing on the 1964 B18 Volvo 1800S and WHERE are the timeing marks. The old book I have talks about chalk marks ???? Are there not real timeing marks on the B18 and what do you set it at. Thanks
Sorry about all thee questions but My sister just drives the car till it has to be fixed and then dumps it on me hehe. I really like working on it but I do need a bette book. Any suggestions.

      B18 timing marks 1800

      10°@600rpm, give it a rev up to 4500ish and observe that the timing does not exceed 32°. This applies to any B18, B20 or B30 A, B, D or E. Set your points to .014", don't worry what a dwell meter says, most are rubbish.

    John's right. It IS the driver's side and you're right, viz is terrible.
    Having a very bright timing light helps, especially if you have shiny or
    light colored surfaces to reflect the flash.
    Bring it over and I'll give you a hand with it. Where US 60 and 75 run
    together, you'll pass Redeemer Lutheran Church on the right. Turn in
    there and go till you see some old Volvos on the south side of the street
    and 3 oak trees in the middle of the driveway.

    The pointer looks like a tall skinny nose on the timing cover.
    If you have air conditioning you may have a nonstandard pulley with
    unusual marks. After a number of years messing around I finally took
    my pulley off, used a protractor and put my own marks on it.
    I'm not sure how much it helped, since I was setting it pretty close
    to where the marks say by ear before I put them on.

      B18 timing marks 1800

      Make own marks is a good idea: one year ago I paint (with a bit of flourescent paint used usually to mark posts on harbors) two marks, one on the pulley and another on the engine (usually I check the timing from under, but first I secure the car against movements - gears on neutral, manual brake on, etc).

      Also, is a good idea to install a removable light into the engine bay for maintenance purpouses, or carry a powerfull one for use with the cigerrete lighter power source connector included (cheap item, at last here).

      George: Thanks for the help, when you look at the marks are you looking down from the drivers side fender or the passsengers side. With the Air cnditioning on the drivers side visability is terrible. Also what do you set it at how many degrees BTDC ? arttleville , not to far, why dont you come over and help me fix this thing haha.

        For whatever reason the timing marks on my PV's engine don't really seem to be anywhere reasonably close to being correct. But in any case I usually don't pay too much attention to them. I just advance the timing until I hear a tiny bit of pinging under a load, then back off slightly. That will generally give you the best (most advanced) timing given all the variables (engine's current compression, gasoline octane and quality, plug type and condition, etc, etc).

    Chalk marks?

    Timing marks are punched into edge of crankshaft pulley on the front of engine(usually dirty so will need a wipe to see)...line them up with the pointer cast into the timing gear cover.
