Volvo without a spark

She died today while running... just cut out completely and I coasted to a stop. She (1991 Volvo 240 Wagon @ 172k) is not giving a spark and it will also not give any fault codes back when testing. Cap is clean and dry, wires, cap, rotor, and plugs were replaced about 4k ago. Might be the Ignition Control Unit... How do I know if I have an EGR or not? Any other suggestions?

Sounds like the crank sensor (rpm sensor) has failed. This lives in a most inconvenient location behind the head, on the top of the transmission bell housing. There is a cable coming from it, which should have a paint band on it: the originals are yellow, replacements have a white band. If it's got a yellow band, it's definitely due for replacement.

I'm assuming that you mean that it actually does turn over, and does not generate any spark out of the coil wire. If that is not the case, then please re-post with any other info.

As the other reply suggested, it's also a really good idea to replace the fuel pump relay if it never has been, as it will kill the car similarly. It won't prevent spark though if it fails.

The 91 does not have the 25A fuseholder under the hood- these use fuses in the main fuse panel to power the fuel injection. Inspect all your fuses as well.

Good luck!

You were correct, Rob, it does turn over, just does not produce a spark from the coil so it's not fuel pump problem. Thank you for the advice on crank sensor. Any idea why it wouldn't generate any fault codes?

How do you know that there is no spark?

Check the easy things before you jump all the way up to the igntion control unit. Check and resolder the fuel pump relay. Check the 25 amp fuse on the drivers side of the engine compartment.

I don't have any rwd cars with egr, but that is not a likely source of your problem. Should be easy to find out. Look for a vacuum controlled valve on or close to the intake manifold with a pipe running to the exhaust manifold or headers.
