Fix this ASAP or risk the differential and bearings. The pinion seal wants replacing.

The fill plug is on the drifers side front of the diff case. 13mm socket with a universal and extension necessary.

Curious, the filler hole should be facing the rear end of the car (closer to the bumper end) and near the middle of the differential cover. It is closed off using a 13mm bolt on my car and you just undo the bolt and check that the oil is level with the hole.

If you have a leak you should fix that soon as a new rear end is either labour intensive or money intensive to fix.... Sometimes both, if you can do the work yourself but can't find used parts. Common place of leakage is at the pinion seal. Check the FAQ for more info.

yes thats true but this vehicle has independant rear suspension and a big old bracket for the linkage sits below the diff and acess to the plug is obstructed

Hmmm, I have a car with a live axle and there are no problems, but this news does not help you and I'm not sure what you should do. The other poster seems to think that you can get in there with some extentions and a 13mm socket. I guess if the shop can check it so can you. This job surely doesn't require removal of suspension parts!! But then there must be some suckers born every day walking towards the blue light representing the Volvo Service Heaven to shell out 7 hours worth of labour to get the diff fluid checked/replaced!! I digress!! ;) LOL!

Hope this helps or that the others have better solutions for you.

Tim
