Hello all,
My 1980 244 GL with 3 spd auto trans has developed a problem. It won't shift out of first until its really warmed up, and once it does shift out it won't drop back down to first on its own, also once driven for awhile it doesn't like to move to well in reverse. The fluid is not overly dirty or discolored, and its not driven hard or towed with. Is there any band adjustments or is it possible a clogged screen could be causing these symptoms?
It doesn't have OD, its just a 3spd auto.

There are no bands in the BW55. It sounds like the seals have become hard and are bypassing fluid until they warm up a bit. Chances are it isn't the screen, although you could drop the pan and see. It probably needs a soft parts overhaul.

Hi, thanks for the reply, is the soft parts overhaul something a DIY can do, or does it require a tear down by a shop? Would an additive that softens seals fix it? I need it to last a couple of more months then I'll probably convert it to a manual. Thanks...

Hi Chuck - The soft parts replacement is the minimum overhaul kit, which requires a complete tear-down. If you are going to replace it soon, then try doping it with can of trans improver. The dope will swell and soften the seals but it is like giving nitro to a heart patient. You will only get so much time out of it....I have used the stuff myself and it does work. Wynns is a good brand.
