Brake drag 200 1989

My right front caliper has started to drag-once in a while. What the heck would cause that?It doesn't happen all the time. It's just a slight pull to the right sometimes. I'll hit the brakes and it will stop(dragging)sometimes and sometimes it won't. It just started one day.Any suggestions?

The left side is working O.K. when I do brake, it stops as it should. I'll try cleaning and lubing the piston in the morning, and check the lines carefully. I'll probably order braided lines just because I should anyways. Thanks for everyones input!

Sounds like a shot in the dark, Blind Boy. :)

Would be really nice if some Jarrod could highlight the dates on aged threads so those like me with poor vision can know the OP won't benefit from replies.

hi sages- these are all very real possibilities and should be checked out. usually it is a stuck caliper,(cocked, dirty, rusted , jammed, foreign particles on the piston, severely worn cylinder or piston. have had these experiences with my long line of dodges, but it would be the same on 240s. strangely while I have periodically inspected them, the brakes haven't yet malfunctioned in my 92 240 since 11 when I got it, other than brake pad replacement. be careful among the jobs on 240s and dodges this one can lead to excessive use of bad words. regards oldduke

The piston may be seizing due to dirt entry past rubber dust boot around piston. Check the dust boot for tears. Wash the dirt out with wd40 and move piston in(with channel locks squeezing brake pad to caliper) and out (with brake pedal) until it stops seizing.

If it's completely seized then new caliper.

Could be the Left side... 200 1989

...if the Left isn't doing its share, and the Right is, it will feel like a pull on the right. I'd pull both wheels and check both sides for the usual suspects, as suggested.

Could be a partially blocked brake line, or a swollen flexible brake line. You might check the flexible lines first, and think about replacing them if they've never been done, and flush and replace the brake fluid.

Just a couple of guesses:
1. The piston is hanging up in the caliper. Since it doesn't do it all of the time I would guess it is just hanging up part time, but will soon advance to a state where it hangs up and then becomes immobil.

2. A pad could be hanging up due to build up on the surfaces it rides on. If this is the case you could remove the pads, clean up the the pad and caliper and then coat the edges with antiseize before reinstalling.

If you find that the piston is hanging up I would replace that caliper.

Randy
