door opens too wide 200 1984

I own a 240 2dr DL where the door opens too wide, the trim gets pinched by the end of the front fender, and bends out sideways (ugly!) when i try to bend it back, it ends up pushing the front fender trim forward when i open the door. My pastor (good guy, bad driver) who gave me the car had hit the general hinge area backing out of a carport (!) and had to shim out the door with washers. I bought a new door for better looks, but still had to shim it out. All looks well, but it just plain opens too wide. Is there a way to block it from oopening to an almost 90 degree angle? I'm on my second peice of trim and I want to fix this before I paint the car. Thanks!

I think John Fraser is right with his questions. Could you just put in a whole new hinge set up, both top and bottom? You can get both pieces from a junk yard for super cheap. It would be worth it to see if the stop on your old door is totally busted. Try the hinges first and then go from there.

Good Luck

Is anything broken on the bottom hinge?
Is the panel the hinge is bolted to bent?
