rear ATE caliper size and rebuild 200 1989

what size are my rear ATE calipers? 38mm? 40mm?

car is 240 DL sedan 1989 B230F

Also, what is involved in a rebuild? Is it just to replace the piston seal?
The pistons get stuck... can I assume I can losten them up after taking them off the caliper and then put them back with a new seal?\

Get yourself a rebuild kit ($10 - $30 depending on caliper)
To take the caliper out, disconnect brake line & seal the line tight with rubber bands + plastic bag. Should have you several hours to rebuild.

When you have the caliper out, you need to pop out the pistons. Put thin wooden block in front of the piston for buffering, then shoot the otherside with air (using air compressor /w proper fittings) It should shoot the fronzen calipers out. Watch your fingers, keep them away frim pistons.

Remove piston(s) and pull out all rubber rings inside.
Install a new rings from caliper rebuild kit.
then clean all the crap off the piston. Sometimes sanding is necessary (using VERY fine sand paper)

Lube the rings with small amount of brake fluid, then slide the piston(s) back in place. It should slide with some wiggeling (if not, go back to the cleaning & sanding step)

Then put everything back in place, add more brake fluid, bleed the brake system.

My first time rebuilding process took 4 hours. After some learning, I can usually rebuild a side in 40 minutes.

I've tried to rebuild rear ATE calipers and never got them right...best bet is to get a pair of rebuilt ones from FCRGroton or such for about $40 each, put them on and feel safe. Never go cheap on brakes...ask me how I know.
