Apparently, I have a shorted charging light wire in the engine compartment wiring harness. When I attach it to the alternator, the charge light goes on whether the key is off or on. Does someone know where to bypass the harness and land the wire on the inside of the car?

Bypass the harness. The route enters the cabin via the gray connector on the firewall. There is only one red wire, it's in pigeonhole #3. You can open up the connector without removing it from the firewall.

Re-use that terminal, hook in some red #14 automotive wire (AutoZone, O'Reilly's, etc.) and route it along the firewall to the RF fender, thence along and down under the washer reservoir, and then over to the alternator. Standard .250 inch insulated female connector at that end.

While you are at it, do the black wire, too. It is subject to the same crumbling insulation and can follow the same route to the oil pressure sensor. Re-use the terminals on both ends. In the connector, the black wire is in pigeonhole #1.

PS. The other two wires in that gray connector are also subject to insulation failure. They terminate on the left side of the engine. The BL-Y goes to the starter and the Yellow goes to the engine temp sender for the temp gauge.
