I need to replace the strut on the front passenger side of my 88 240, well thats one thing they say I need to do to pass inspection. My Haynes manual says
I have MacPherson struts. Any suggestions on places to order cheap replacements? And do I need to get A new spring? Any help would be great. Thanks....mike

Most likely you need to install new cartridges, best done to both front struts at the same time using matching parts.

The springs will be fine. And on an '88, the spring cups should be fine since Volvo begain galvanizing them back in '85 or '86. My '86 245 with 285k miles has original, solid spring cups even here in salty Massachusetts.

Yes, FCP Groton (click here) are the folks to ask first about 240 parts, although there are a number of reliable suppliers for these parts.

hello . i replaced the strut inserts and did not think of the springs on my 1985 244. oops . darn. doooooooooo. when i do my 1986 244 dl i will replace the springs. good luck.

I don't think changing the springs are necessary. While they are off you can have your dealer test them. As a rule though I don't think it is usually done.

My understanding as that these should be replaced in pairs so do both. The springs should be fine. The spring seat should be looked at for soundness as well. FCP Groton has good parts for good price.
