fitting AW70/71 to B20/30 120-130

Im thinking of putting a B20E or maybe even a B30E into my volvo 122/amazon. I'd like to have an automatic gearbox going with it, but more inportant: an overdrive. So I'm thinking off using an AW71.
I know I will have to modify driveshaft, mountings and whatevermore but will an AW71 fit straight onto a B20/B30? What are the steps to take? Do I have to use the bellhousing/torquconverter of a BW35 perhaps and bolt the AW71 onto that?
I understand that there are bellhousings specially cut/welded to lett it fit straight away, but do I realy need this? I also fitted a M47 onto my B20, and a M46 onto a B18 just by using a bellhousing from aan B23 and putting the gearbox on a slant. (see my http://knutselsmurf.web1000.com) I wouldn't try putting an automatic box on an angle but isn't there a way to fitt it on without using a custum bellhousing?

I only know of one 122 that had a B30 installed. That has been probably
20 years ago and have not been able to find out anything about it.
You would probably have to extend the front frame, fenders, hood, etc.

You have to use the tranny that matches the engine or else get a custom
bellhousing because B20 and B30 will not use the same bellhousings.

The standard trannies are SO MUCH better than the automatics that you will
be machine-gunning yourself in the shins (much worse than shooting yourself
in the foot) if you don't use a standard tranny (M40/41 or 400/410,
or maybe even the later M47, etc.

b30 in 122s 120-130

Hi, George. Your car is ready.

-from http://www3.telus.net/public/iadr/V/

Trade you for a pic of that red b30 with the triple SU's from the TPC page?- I didn't snag a copy of that one, & would like a copy.

Those carbs look interesting, they look like CV like an SU. I wonder what size they are?

Not a great deal, no. I guess the semi obvious: that it uses motorcycle carbs on a hand made intake, and that the heater was relocated inside under the dash as part of the procedure of getting it to fit. No pictures of motor mounts or anything else.
Having a 122 and a 164 to compare, I'm sure you're way ahead of me in picking up on other details!

I have seen this pic before on the internet, it is said this B30 is build into a 122, but if you look you see not just the heater was placed inside but the whole firewall is from a 164, and also the mountings for the 'front wings' (or whatever they're called in english, excuse) are different. I also see that the whole chassis on both sides of the engine are just like in a 164.

So two possible options arise:
-its just a 164 with some funny carbs,
-its a 122 with a whole 'front section'/engine bay from a 164, so including front suspension etc. What do you think?

I'm thinking of putting an B30 in a 122 just by letting the engine stick forward a bit further, which would mean going straight through the radiator...
so i would have to relocate that. I also gues I would have to use stronger suspension springs swaybar etc because of the increase in weight. Things like that can all be solved but I'm not sure if the car would still react/handle ok when going round the corner a bit fast...

fitting AW70/71 to B20/30 120-130

There is an article in the S-E-ES magazine ,March/April 2000, about this.
An adaper was put between the bell housing and the transmission (that's right not the engine). The bell housing was machined to have space for the adapter.
This was in an 1800ES. The BW35 cross member was used without modification.

I gues this 'apdaptor plate' you're refering to, is to put the tranny in horizontal position? But will all the other parts fitt straight away? I mean: if I just buy an AW70 with its torque converter and I could get hold of an adaptor plate (or else a modified bellhousing) could I fit it straight to a B20 or a B30? Are the connections on the flywheels of the 122,164,240 series all the same?? It would be easy if so, but is that realy the case?

Right, Horizontal. The b20 bw35 flywheel was used with the bolts from the AW70 torque converter.

So if I want to use a B20 my 'shoppinglist' would be:
-B18/20-BW35-flywheel
-AW70 tranny (with spedometer)
-adaptor plate or a modified bellhousing
And if I use a B30? Same stuff but then a B30-BW35-flywheel?

Ben

By the way the article says the AW70 will fit the B30 with the adapter.
