Brake Type ATE/Girling 200 1983

My Volvo just started making some strange chaffing sounds from the rear brake areas. Normally, when the brake pad gets to the low point, it makes the high pitch squealing sound, but this is a low pitch chaffing sound. Anyways, I figure it's probable the brake pads needing replaced. The autoparts store asked me if I need ATE or Girling. I didn't know, so they told me to look at my calipers and it will tell me. I was told to look at both the front ones and the rear ones, since they could be different.

My questions:
Do you have to take off the tires to see what type of brake pads you need or will it tell me anywhere on the car?

I've heard of people making mistakes when bleeding the brakes on a Volvo. Do you have to bleed the brakes if you just change the pads?

From reading past posts, where can I purchase MetalMaster Pads? Or is the ones AutoZone carries ok? Thanks for all your help.

    There is a Service Label on the car that can tell you what type brakes and other things are on your specific car.

    Open the trunk and look towards the right side hinge. The label should be on the frame of the opening. Titled "Service Label.

    Version Number - 6 digits. #1 & 2 = series. 24 = 240; #3 = doors.
    #4 & 5 = engine. 88 = B230F; #6 = trim level. 02 = DL, 03 = GL.

    Line saying Brakes: 1 = Girling front & rear. 2 = Girling front, ATE rear.

    Line saying clutch: 2 = Fichtel & Sachs, 3 = Verto/Valeo

    Line saying Steering Gear: 2 = CAM Gear. 3 = ZF (disc where boot attached to tie rod).

    Hope this helps.

      Bob, thanks for your help.
      I did what you said and found the trunk sticker and this is what mine says
      244887
      24 = model 240
      4 = # of doors, which I do have a 4 door
      88 = engine type, you stated that 88 means B230F
      7 = trim level, what would be a 7, My car has the GL insignia on the trunk lid.

      You were right on regarding the brakes, which state
      Brakes #2, Girling Front, ATE Rear, I changed them Thursday night. all went well.
      Fuel Pump #3 , hey, what does the 3 mean?
      Dynamo #1, what's a Dynamo and the number 1 next to it?
      Steering Geer #3 = ZF

      Thanks again,
      Dale

    Take the wheel off and use a wire brush to clean the brake calipers. The brand should be stamped somewhere. In my 240, the fronts are Girling and the rears are ATE.

    No, you don;t need to bleed brakes if you are just changing pads, unless you haven't replaced the brake fluid in years!

    I think Autozone carries PBR metalmasters.

    Cheers,
    SM
