Brake Type ATE/Girling 200 1983

My Volvo just started making some strange chaffing sounds from the rear brake areas. Normally, when the brake pad gets to the low point, it makes the high pitch squealing sound, but this is a low pitch chaffing sound. Anyways, I figure it's probable the brake pads needing replaced. The autoparts store asked me if I need ATE or Girling. I didn't know, so they told me to look at my calipers and it will tell me. I was told to look at both the front ones and the rear ones, since they could be different.

My questions:
Do you have to take off the tires to see what type of brake pads you need or will it tell me anywhere on the car?

I've heard of people making mistakes when bleeding the brakes on a Volvo. Do you have to bleed the brakes if you just change the pads?

From reading past posts, where can I purchase MetalMaster Pads? Or is the ones AutoZone carries ok? Thanks for all your help.
