Transmition problem 240 DL 1989 200 1989

Since a couple of days I have a problem with my automatic transmition. Sometimes it does not directly shifts in its 1st gear. It’s only the 1st gear, the others are fine. It’s like a little hiccup, like it’s in neutral and when I push the gas pedal a bit it shifts in 1st gear with a little shock. Again, it only happens once in a while. Hope you can give me some advice.
Thank you very much,
Pieter

Transmition problem RESOLVED, THANKS A LOT FOR ADVICE. 200 1989

Thanks for the advice, I checked the oil and indeed it was low. A bottle of transmition oil and it runs like new.

It could also be a worn ball in the valve body. I had the same problem on mine. It didn't need a rebuild. The delay in shifting went away when I changed the transmission fluid. Not a flush, just the fluid in the pan-it cleaned a bunch of gunk out.

I agree with Andyknight- sounds like the fluid is low. If it's actually slipping (I know, it's hard to tell without a tachometer) then it's either low on fluid or the trans is going bad. Hopefully it's the former problem.
Always pull the stick, clean, replace, pull and check- sometimes an air pocket forms that prevents accurate readings on the first pull.

No to be patronising but have you made sure the fluid in the transmission is at it's proper level?, check it with the car running in neutral. My 82 wagon with automatic did nearly the same thing you described, turned out to be a quart low on fluid. Hope that does it!
