flame trap conversion 200 1985

Thanks to all of the members and the posts in the past. I went to the yard yesterday and picked up the newer flame trap and flame trap hoses from '88 and newer 240s. I succesfully relocated my flame trap for easier access on top of the intake manifold for my '85 244. It took about 30 to 40 minutes to clean all the hoses found from junkyard, (which looked new, but aren't) cutting and retrofitting. The hoses and trap cost me about $5. I've heard of the vacuume test w/ the oil filler cap. Even though it seem difficult to test w/ the newer oil cap, I DID feel more vacuume than before retrofitting the relocated trap. Now cleaning the trap will be enjoyable instead of a dreaded maintainence subject. I would recommend this. Thanks again, and as always for the help.

In pre-1988 B230F and B23, the main wiring harness routes downward between Rail #3 and #4 of the intake manifold. On the 1988, the harness goes down between the firewall and rail #4, leaving the #3-#4 space open for the "S" hose cming up from the oil box to the flame trap housing.

Did you have any problems with the wiring harness being in the way?

I think that converting the PCV system that way is a super idea, and well worth whatever you pay. What you did, with the taller oil box and "S" hose and such, is the exact best way to go.

Regards,

Bob

I thought I noticed a taller oil box on the later 240's in the junkyard, but I wasn't sure. I didn't use the "s" shaped pipe at all, but grabbed two of everything just in case. I used an extra rubber pipe that runs from the intake hose to trap (used on later style) on the oil box-through the intake manifold. I cut both ends off to fit accordingly. I just stuck the trap and holder inside that pipe at the top then fit the last rubber pipe to the air intake hose and to top/cover trap. Everything is clean and fits tighter than the original trap. I didn't have any problems w/ the wiring harness at all. I also found out that my original flame trap was missing the trap part with the small holes.
