'Sir Your Car Is A Piece Of S*i+T" How do you replace the back glass? 700

At 20:40 I'm sitting in the drive through at the local Arbys (uptown) with my son getting an evening snack when I was approached by a man from the car behind me. He motioned for me to open the window as to speak to me. I made sure I had my weapon in hand and rolled down the window 1/4 travel and asked what he wanted. The then states "Sir your car stinks man its a piece of sh*t get this F***ing thing out of here" I reply "You are entitled to your opinion and would you please return to your vehicle". He proceeds to the back of my brick and swings at the rear window shattering it in the process. I get out of my car to arrest the man and he throws a beer bottle through the open window frame striking my son in the head. I quickly look to make sure my son was alright, identify myself as a police officer and inform him that he was under arrest. The man then began to fight with me briefly and my son assisted in the arrest by punching the man out for several minutes. I placed him in handcuffs and called for assistance, I was met by four local officers who took the man into custody for ADW to an officer, crim damage to a vehicle, assault of a minor, disorderly conduct and the driver was charged with having an open container and driving after suspension. Both parties have been placed in the county jail and the vehicle (ironically a saab) was towed to the city impound lot.
I took my son to the hospital and he received 13 stitches to the back of his head.
Rule 1, never mess with an off-duty officer or his 6 foot 230 pound teenage son who works out after doing his homework. You may however speak your opinion in a non threatening manner, even if one hates me, I wont take it personally.

Now how do I replace the back glass? I see the obvious however how can I remove the trim around the glass without breaking it or the little retainers? I hadn't planned on doing much this weekend but I guess no one ever knows the fate of a saturday!

I'm glad you and your son are OK. Make the bastard pay for the window, your son's medical bills, pain and suffereing. This guy has to live somewhere and from your description of what happened, won't be needing any of his assets for quite a while. His house and car are fair game.

This is proof that alchohol makes people stupid. Illegal drugs don't help either.

Very sorry to hear about your misfortune. Thank goodness you’re both OK. I had a cracked windshield in my 740. I didn't replace it myself, had somebody else do it. Cost me $225. They came to my work and installed it in the parking lot. It might have been somewhat cheaper for me to do it, but I didn't have the proper tools, and didn't want to run the risk of breaking the new one during installation. Buying a second window or paying someone to put one in after messing up on the first try could really be an expensive proposition. For me there was too much down side risk to justify the potential savings. Also, the convenience to me well outweighed the potential savings.

I rarely come into the 700 section. I thought you had left badge? ...well glad you here still! I don't know about the window, but luckily you two are fine. Yeah, sounds like the A**hole messed with the wrong person. Happily he was captured. Sorry to see bad things happen to good people. He must have been very much wasted to call your Volvo a piece of s*i+t.

Dear Badge - very happy you're okay and son is healing, but please be careful. We need all we can get of guys like you. I agree with the other posters - the window is NOT your problem. Let butthead's insurance co. take care of it or go to court. I'm sure you know your way around that little piece of heaven anyway.

Some vehicles have the a**hole magnet option and some don't. Don't bother even looking for it. You can't turn it off and I challenge even long time contributors such as Don, Steve and Invar to tell you exactly where it is located. My brick has it too but the USMC sticker seems to neutralize it most of the time.

One more bad guy in the pokey. Boo Hoo.

Well this incident is a perfect example why I carry a USP 45 loaded with Winchester Ranger 230 gn +P's. It is also nice to be 6'4" 240 Lbs. I don't look for trouble but try my best to avoid pissing people off when driving. There are just too many losers, assholes, bad attitudes, and idiots trying to prove there manhood to take a chance. The bumper sticker and (sign in the back window) doesn't hurt. USMC Sniper, and CHANDLER Sniper Weapons System, you can run but you will only die tired. They figure I'm a nut with a gun (Don't tell anyone) so they give me a lot of room. Although I never put mine on I do hear a NRA sticker works well at persuading people to leave you alone. Badge did you get my Email on the Zylon vests.

Thank God this happens to someone else. Not that I'm happy that it HAPPENED to you or your son, but I swear it, I always get these f*ckin' idiots, and according to people in OPINIONS, I'm the only one. At least you have just shown other people, that this happens OUT OF THE BLUE. I'm serious about this. Every asshole with an attitude seems to play road rage and other half-wit asshole games with me, and with my huge 135lbs of bulk, about the only thing I'm good for, is running. I literally do nothing to prompt it, but people PERCIEVE things as being offensive. Usually they are the rough-and-tumble, (*ugh*) "hard-drinkin', hard livin'" types, who feel that they somehow have been dished the short end of life's stick at every turn. You can just tell.

I think, it is just Volvo in general. I never had this problem driving anything else but Audis (another magnet). Step into a Taurus or an Impala for a few months, and you'll notice the conspicuous absence of assholes and idiots. Unfortunately there isn't anything I can do about it, as a private citizen, and the cops here don't take that kind of bullshit seriously at ALL. At least you COULD do something about it.

Good thing you didn't chuck your badge a few months ago!

I think it's something about the northern Midwest, personally. Milwaukee is the same collection of belligerant, stupid idiots. Chicago seems to be a lot better in that respect, but once you hit northern Lake and McHenry counties... it all goes down the toilet. Funny thing, if the Saab is new, it's usually driven by professionals and other people who are too busy to be pricks to society. However, if it's old, somehow it becomes the bane of traffic's existence. Usually piloted by someone stuck in the self-indulgent 80s, and packing a ton of attitude to illustrate it.

Honestly, I don't know what the problem is. And the scary thing is, these people have jobs, and some of them have good jobs. Amazing, that they are even tolerated in society with attitudes like that... but they are. Kind of like my drunk employee who just doesn't show up when he feels like it.

Also, thank your son on the part of DECENT society for kicking the guy's ass. I hope he knocked the guy's ass around for that one. You ought to sue.

My view is that replacing the glass to your satisfaction is NOT YOUR problem.
Getting the miscreant to do it may be your problem but I would make sure that
he (NOT his insuror) gets no peace until you are happy with both him and the
replacement.

BTW where do you live? We hardly ever see or hear of that kind of stuff here
in the center of the US. We can also buy a good house for $100K or less.
Maybe you should leave the coast and come to the real world!

Are you entitled to file a civil suit against that drunken idiot? Small claims court?

Foot the bill for a professional replacement and sue the s.o.b. for that plus medical plus pain and suffering plus whatever else you can think of, as long as the total is below the max for Small Claims Court in your state. Whether or not his insurance covers it is irrelevant.

You surely have an attorney friend who can offer advice with it. The facts, as you state them, indicate that the assault had nothing to do with your occupation. I would hope that you can get the info to ID any witnesses, like Arby's employees.

Good Luck -

Bob

Any idea why this miscreant picked you out of the crowd? I'm sorry it happened, but at least you were very well prepared for the situation. I doubt the beer bottle tosser had any idea that you and your son could take care of the situation.

"Now how do I replace the back glass? I see the obvious however how can I remove the trim around the glass without breaking it or the little retainers? I hadn't planned on doing much this weekend but I guess no one ever knows the fate of a saturday! "

If you would like I will send you a file on replacing the rear glass in a sedan. It has all the pictures and shows the (unecessary) factory tools for the job. Yes, the window is glued in, and they come out tough. The trim is removed from the bottom of the glass first by pring against the missing rear glass. Then you push the trim moulding clips from the sides and upper edge (Not the lower edge).

Isn't your car a 1985? They used the large wire rear window glass. When Volvo went to the fine wire rear glass (1987 modle year) with more defrosting power, they upgraded the rear defroster switch. I like the fine wire glass better, and that is probably what your replacement glass will be. I would be delighted to send you the newer rear defroster switch if you need it.

Thanks for the offer John, I did replace the glass on my own. I dont care for my insurance company and with the previous crash of my 900 I dont want to rattle anymore cages. The glass cost me $15.00 and I did get the 1984 fat wire glass. Pretty easy once I looked at it in the sun. I did however have to make a tool to pop out the plastic retainers for the half channel but that was pretty easy with the air die grinder. The only real pain of the project was cleaning off the broken glass from the glued frame as the rubber wanted to follow the knife without the outer support of the glass. Once cleaned up it was real easy, just glue it in place and wait.

*yawn Im off to bed*

I'm guessing that he was driving his diesel, and the offending maniac didn't have the sophisticated olfactory nerves to be able to distinguish the delicate bouquet of diesel smoke from a worn out oil burner.

Bad luck, Badge 988, I bet you get plenty enough crap ON the job; unfortunately you got a big slice on your free time too...

Have you checked with your insurance company? Most offer zero deductible on glass. I just got a free new windshield after a fair-sized rock bounced off, leaving quite a crater. Klein-Dickert was the name of the outfit, they are very good and even replaced some mounting clips that were already busted.

Watching the work was a bit of an education, the plastic trim popped off with a small screwdriver then the silicone-type adhesive that glues the window in place was cut. Once the glass was out the guy cleaned off all the old adhesive and primed the window seat with a kind of rubberized paint, to seal any scrapes and provide a good sealing surface for the new adhesive. He also replaced broken clips at this time. After laying about a 5/8" bead of caulk in the seat he set the window in, then replaced the trim by snapping it back on. That was it, but he said let the adhesive set up for a couple of hours before driving.

He made it look easy, but I dunno if I would want to jump in and try it myself... that is a big piece of expensive glass, about $400, he said, if a guy had to pay.

Good luck with it, anyway...

I like cops. I am a conservative neaderthal.

Dude, I know it's not important what I think, but I'm not sure if I believe your story or not. What did he hit the safety glass with? Your son was in the back seat?

Where do you live?

Go to a glass shop and haggle. Shop around, these guys deal, it's a competive business (not the chain types)

Seems odd to me 700

Could you clarify some things for me. You said you had your gun drawn when he approached the vehicle and then he was fighting with you. When did you put your gun away? Did he start to fight you with your gun in your hand? What did he break window with? Seems like it would be hard to smash through the back window with a fist, then not only to crack it but to make a whole to through a beer bottle though.

I had my hand on my gun that was in my shoulder harness however I did not pull my weapon at that point, I thought the verbal altercation had passed by this point as he began to walk away to the rear of my vehicle, more like stumble. He did smash the window out with the end of his fist much like pounding on a table, remember the rear glass is tempered but not laminated so it shatters into little pieces when broken. I doubt he felt any real pain at the moment and some people feel like superman after consuming that much beer and mary-j as he did. I later learned he consumed a 6-pack and 2 joints worth of pot.

Now the next question is will he sue me for my son punching him out?

Sorry to hear of your run in with a wacko. Im in NJ--and have a complete real tailgate with glass from an 84 245. If you are local or not too far away--its yours to pick up. It would be expensive to ship to most anywere due to its bulkiness and weight. Im in coastal monmouth county--if you are close by--its yours free. Iv had a few run ins with a few nut cases in my life--glad your deal turned out ok. I hope they hold the two wackos in a cell with a 340 lbs se x offender named Bubba. Email me if you can use the tailgate--would like to find a good home for it--rust free and would like to give to you complete

Damn badge988..You must feel like some kind of 'Shit magnet'... 700

I remember last time you posted your run in with the neiborhood freek...What a story...I am sure you will catch some shit over this one as well..Some people around here seem to think you can always resolve things in a peacefull manor...They probably have one of them "Visualize World Peace" stickers on their bumper..Dream on baby....What I visualize is people like this dumb ass in a jail cell with some 280 pound missing link type that thinks he has a purty mouth...That is why I could not do your job...Hell I probably would have shot the guy as soon as he called my Volvo a piece of shit...And once the judge saw how fine looking my 740 is..I am sure she/he would say the shooting was justified. :-) BTW..I am glad your son is OK..I had a very close friend killed in his front yard by a beer bottle thrown from a passing car. I have no tolerance of people who drink and drive or drink to point that they are no longer in control of their actions.....And what is "ADW"? You know what..I think I just got it..Assult with a Deadly Weapon???

Would you recommend that all of us reach for our weapons every time someone comes up to our cars and motions for us to roll down the window?

You sure lead an exciting life. Good guys = cops & their family, bad guys = everybody else.

I'm sure there's nothing more to this story than what you write.

The Arbys I was at is caught between the good and bad part of town, trendy uptown to the west and rough and tumble Lake street to the east where drug deals go down all hours of the day without a care in the world. Chicago and Lake is an area you do not spend any time at after say 1800 (6PM) or any time on the weekends. The uptown part however has one of the lowest crime rates of the city only because to many people are out and about with cell phones stuck to their ears not to mention 2 foot patrols at any given time.

I do ask however that you clairify "Good guys = cops & their family, bad guys = everybody else"

I do not see everybody else as the bad guy and after my shift I become the "everybody else" that you describe. Sure cops are cops both on and off duty however I do not like to take my job home with me and what you do with your life is your own business.

gee I could become a used Volvo salesman!

He probably deduces that from life experience. How many cops you see getting moving violation tickets. We have all witnessed them driving as poorly as everyone else (on and off duty).

Sorry, not much help on the window, but WOW, what a story. If i remember right (from previous posts), haven't you had to bust some heads before while off duty? Does that get old, or do you see it as just coming with the territory? Anyways, as my wife and I always say, "No one expects the Spanish Inquisition" (referring to the unexpected window breakage).

Ive had a few altercations in the past and none that I cared for. When you are a cop on or off duty you are looked upon with a stigma that "he might bust me" or "all cops are assholes". More often than not being I live in the city and make no real effort to hide behind the "blue wall" of law enforcement I do come across people that I have interfaced with during the course of duty. Some are nice but most look at me as the cop who papered my friend or whoever it may be, I do have to live with that however I try my best to leave the job out of my home life so I can be the best dad that I can be. When was the last time you thanked a cop for a ticket?

Cops are cops we know this and no matter how you try a cop still looks like a cop. Dress in dirty clothes, drive a junker whatever its that "protocol" that officers often live by that gives them away. When I say protocol I mean the watching everything around you, taking mental notes of your enviroment and watching the person next to you to see if he is going to break some little law or worse. Unfortunatly we must also live in a moderated fear knowing the guy next to you may have been released from prison and is looking for a cop to get even with. It may not be the arresting officer however he doesn't care he just wants to "one-up" himself. Another thing all cops deal with is a prejudice from the general public especially from the minority communities over the racial profiling that has come to light in the past several years. I will be the first to admit my T/O was a prejudice officer to no end,(racist asshole!) his idea of thinking was "hes black so hes guilty of *some* crime so lets bust him", needless to say this officer has been reassigned to other duties that do not interface directly with the general public. When I was a young hot-head rookie I briefly took on this stigma however quickly learned this was not the case and the reverse was true. I wont go onto a tangent over race however I would like the USA to get over this color thing and start to live in peace, to me its the diffrence between a white 760 brick and a black 760 brick... only the color and its still a 760. My real reason for becoming an officer is to make an attempt at removing drunks from the road. After loosing loved ones to the hand of a drunk driver I can honestly say I have a personal reason for doing what I do. Call it selective enforcement or whatever you want but Im more inclined to make a DWI bust than I am a speeding ticket.

Some have asked do cops get tickets? Hopefully I can answer the previous posts and the 3 emails and one flame mail. In a word yes cops do get tickets. Parking, speeding whatever. Some cops will take advantage of the badge and use it as rank and file over the city cop or parking meter maid, whatever the case may be however it does come back to haunt them. Any officer under my command who uses his badge for personal gain gets some real hell from me and depending on the crime itself is subject to review or departmental transfer, read paper pusher. He may also get a shift he does not like or get paired up with another officer he does not like.
So in short cops do get tickets and the honest ones just take it in stride of being human. Just because I hold a badge that does not mean I am better than anyone else.
To address the flame of "Cops have small ****" my only response is it looks like the pot calling the kettle black. Oh and please dont email me again if you dont have anything nice to say.
