91 240 Automatic Transimission Overdrive will not engage 200

Thanks in advance for any help you guys can offer.

Ok i have a 91 240 with approximately 140k,automatic transimission while driving about two weeks ago I noticed the overdrive was not engaging I have been told that there is a relay that controls this fuction. Where is it located and what would be the best method of testing?

Don,

Thanks for the help!! Pulled the relay found no obvious open runs or cracks, but I resoldered the board anyway, checked and replaced the fuse for the heck of it cleaned the fuse terminals as well still can not get over drive to engage.
I can hear the relay when the button is pushed in/out so I dont know if this eliminates that as a source of the problem or not any other suggestions.

The relay is under the right-central dashboard vent, usually hiding under a wiring harness and often clipped to a metal strut.

It is easily accessible by removing the glovebox and looking in and to the left.

The picture below shows the relay in my '82 245 -- it's blue, while yours is probably white.

Discard the metal clip. It cause damage.

Yopiu can remove the plastic relay housing to repair the circuit board.

Very often the solder connections in the relay fail (age, vibration, heat) and the relay becomes intermittent or dead. Resoldering can restore the relay to full function. $0, no risk, 15 minutes work, clean and easy job. If it helps nothing, you're out nothing.

Examine the relay carefully and be sure to look for a burned copper trace -- it sometimes burns when the solenoid wire becomes chaffed and touches ground. The pictures below show:

a) A relay with cracks.
b) The same relay with burned copper trace.
c) The same relay fully resoldered and repaired.

Also check the fuse.

The relay God has spoken 200

Don, I think it's great that you have a tireless ability to respond to these OD relay posts. I'm sure you've helped hundreds of people by now with your $0, 15 minute fix. Thanks for the good work.

The relay boob has spoken 200

Bob, it's just like fixing a relay. It takes 15 seconds and costs $0 to respond. I'm obviously reusing the same ol' pictures....

I have a 91 as well. My relay has been acting up, and I haven't taken the time to pull and resolder it. However, as far as a testing the relay goes, when mine won't engage I just thump the glovebox, and it comes right back.

Reminds me of the Simca 1100 I used to have twenty years ago. Lots of quirks. The lowest point of the car was the starter motor, so inevitably it got filled up with road dust etc. to the point it refused to work. I used to carry a hammer in the car to tap it lightly until the brushes again made contact with the rotor. The wife didn’t particularly like this, she complained over getting odd looks at parking lots, so after only six weeks of this I fixed it on the kitchen table. Which she also didn’t like. I guess it proves the old saying; there are two kinds of women, those who fuss over everything and those who fuss over nothing. But I digress...
