Can anyone tell me what I might expect to pay to have my '90 240's transmission repaired? It's been dripping and slipping since since August, and now slips badly and has a burned smell when I stop. I'm weighing repair vs. replacement of the 225,000 mile sedan.

I'll third that, get a used tranny out of a 90s 240 (or 700) that was hit enough to total it, but otherwise looks taken care of. They are not that hard to find. Open it up and check for fried fluid. At local pick and pulls they are $35 plus a $10 core, guaranteed for 31 days, refundable. You might not get that deal but you get the idea.

Forget repair: replace it with a used unit. But first flush the fluid to see if that improves things. Regular fluid changes will prevent these problems.

If you've been driving it that long with it slipping & it just getting worse, don't bother a repair, just go get a used tranny. I SERIOUSLY doubt if a flush will help it now, it may have before it got so bad.

I would make certain to flush the replacement when installed though.
