I have a sender I'm planning to put in the oil drain plug, but have no idea how to connect the wires! For a picture (second one down):

A nice male/female set up would be nice, but this one has me stumped. The 'cap' on the end of the sender does not unscrew; what sort of connector will work?

Great sender and there is a clip type adaptor that goes on there. However, don't you need a 3/4" SAE thread for your oil drain?
Beyond that, run the sender wire to "G" always the sender connection on VDO gauges, the earth symbol wire from the gauge to instrument ground and the "+" wire from an ignition activated fuse to the gauge. Instrument light is always the brown wire in the dash and use a 3M connector.

The sender I have is 1/8-27 NPT, for which I will drill and tap the regular oil drain plug. Is there another place to put the temp sender? It seems vulnerable at the drain plug: road debris, oil changes, etc.
Also, is the sender grounded by being part of the engine, or is a separate ground wire needed?

I've done it many times; be careful how far you run the tap in or the sender will bottom out without sealing.

OK, I have done the same and the only problem is the insert sender is so short. But it might work. There is no ground needed.

I had a Scirroco with similar looking oil temp sender a while ago. The stock connection was a standard female spade, the "disk" of the sender slid right in. It was much smaller that a Volvo drainplug though.

Doh!! I had some spare female connectors: they fit perfectly! Thanks for making me see the proper solution! I had never seen a sender like the one I have, so naturally I thought some sort of obscure connector would be needed. Not so...
