Sudden Loss of Power during a rainy day 200

This evening I was on my way to work and I was pulling out into traffic with my amazing 240 acceleration when the car practically stalled. If I gave it gas the engine wouldnt really rev any higher than it would if I let it idle. I pulled over and turned off the car (maybe a bright idea?). After restarting the car it ran fine. I'm thinking cracked distributor cap? Your opinions?

Rob,

You might have a problem with your engine wiring harness. Several critical wires can behave strangely in wet weather. Your year suffers from the harness rot or biodegradable insulation problem, so unless you or a PO have replaced with a newer one, I would definitely look there.

My 1986 with 250K miles had a problem similar to yours, but I was not so lucky when I tried to restart. I had to have it towed and then started trying to fix it. With the great help of this board I was able to narrow it down to the AMM. I got a replacement AMM from a pick-n-pull for $25 and that fixed it. I had also replaced the fuel pump relay, and cleaned the fuses to see if that would fix it.

Also, I would clean the 25A fuse blades and holder, inside the driver side fender in the engine compartment. Whether this is superstition or actually has a benefit, I'm not sure. On my '86 it definitely had some oxide buildup which must have been reducing the current and voltage.

Good luck!

TomD

Check the wiring harness to the 25 amp fuse by the battery. The insulation may have worn on the wiring. The rain could cause intermittent grounding.
