My bumper is falling off 200 1988

The rear bumper of my 1988 station wagon is falling off. The shock on one side is compressed and whatever holds the bumper in place is broken. The mechanic said the aluminium rotted and so there is nothing to hold the bumper in place on that side. Have you had this problem and, if so, how did you fix it? Thanks.

This happened to my car as well. Since the bumper is aluminum and the mount is steel, it's just a matter of time before galvanic corrosion sets in. In my case, I fixed it by attaching a foot-long piece of steel bar stock (about 1-in wide) horizontally across the rusted-out part of the bumper. The bar stock is attached at both ends with bolts. I drilled two holes in the middle of the bar (aligning these holes to the hole in the bumper mount) and then fastened the bar to the bumper mount with the original bolts.

Good luck,

-dave

Do you have to remove the bumper? Is it difficult to remove it? Thanks.

Yup, that exactly happened to me a year ago. I went to a junkyard and got a bumper off another 240 for 15 bucks or so....it's worked fine since. Not too much of a pain to do either. good luck
