Hello, I've got a tire compatibility question for you fine folks..
I have an 86 760 wagon with 195/60R15 tires on it. I would like to put them, wheels and all, on my 85 740 GLE that has 185/70SR14 tires...Can I switch them just like that?
I've never bothered to figure out what those wonderful sizes actually mean and now I'm paying for it..haha. Any help is appreciated.

Most Volvo wheels are 108x5 bolt pattern and will interchange. Even 16-17 etc

In other words, NO DIFFERENCE.

It would technically make your spedo 0.1% slower. So when you drive 100,000 miles, it would loose 100 miles. That's if every tire was the same from brand to brand, or even model to model, which they aren't. They're always slightly different. Enjoy the 15's.

Overall circumference and height will be almost identical.

You should have no problem putting the 15 " wheels on your GLE. ABS requires 15" wheels to clear the larger front calipers, so you probably can't put 14" wheels on your 760. FYI, size designations for aspect ratio (eg in the size "195/60x15", the number 60 is the aspect ratio) indicate the profile of the tire - smaller numbers, smaller bead area, lower tire. So, a 185/70 and a 195/60 on the same size rim will have approximately the same diameter. Also FYI, I currently run 205/55x15 tires on my 760 - not sure if it was OEM size, but no clearance problems and a comfortable ride.
