On my girlfriend's 88, I remember having a little trouble tightening the nuts for the electrical terminals on the intank pump. As I recall, the plastic divider in between the two terminals made it impossible to use either a socket or a nut driver. I had to tighten it with some needle-nose pliers, which wasn't my first choice but the only thing that would remotely work.

Since I am now faced with that repair on my '88, I'm curious if anybody else has had this minor problem and if so what you used to tighten the nuts down.

By the way, I just can't understand how this whole intank pump can be safe. Isn't there a risk of a spark in there if an electrical problem develops? I guess it can't be a problem because there aren't thousands and thousand of Volvos exploding all over the place, but I just wish I understood why it is safe to have a motor inside the tank.

I just changed out a prepump today on my 89DL. I have a small set of open end wrenches that I use for my work (the smallest is less than 1/8"). I believe they were purchased from SnapOn years ago. I don't use them very often but when I need them they are irreplaceable. I have never looked for them but my guess is that a number of places would carry something similiar.

The motors are completely sealed and so my GUESS is that any arcing that might be occuring is isolated from the gasoline. Besides most of the time the prepump is submerged in liquid gasoline. It is the vapor that is dangerous. Certainly someone who really KNOWS will be able to give you the definitive answer.
