Lost power under boost. Will only run for about five seconds. 700 1990

Greetings,
I posted yesterday, lost power under boost and when I got to a parking spot the car would idle but any thing else was a no go. Got some replies to check the turbo hoses these are OK. Today the car will start and run for about five seconds and quit. It doesn't sputter just dies. Checked fuel coming into the rail and seems to have an abundant supply. How do I check for a bad AMM or ECU. The faq said to jumper the fuel pump relay but I seem to have plenty of gas. Any help or suggestions would really be appreciated. Sorry the car is a 90 740 turbo.

Thanks,
blair

It sounds to me like you have a leak in one of your turbo hoses or the intercooler. It could be the AMM, but I would double check the turbo hoses. Check carefully around the hose clamps. That is where mine wore through.

The engine will run in limp home mode with the AMM disconnected, but not very well. This mode should get you home if the problem is the AMM or a hose leak. Do not disconnect the AMM unless the power is off.

Good Luck!

I take it that if you can say for sure that the hoses are ok then you have the car somewhere that you can work on it. (Hose leaks are easy to miss). So now I would take a compression test on each cylinder, they all should read 150-170 lbs. If one or more cylinders varies from this you could have major problems and should at least figure on pulling the head. If all cylinders show good compression look at the plugs you pulled. If they are carboned up, sooty, and fouled then look once again carefully at the turbo hoses.

Thanks for the input. Found the AMM to be clogged with the foam from the air cleaner. I read about it in the FAQs and thought I should check it out before more extensive teardown. Problem solved car is zooming.
Thanks again.

First time I have heard of foam in the air filter, most of them are paper type. Glad you found the problem. It is so nice to be able to solve a problem that looks major with a minor repair.

The foam is not part of the air filter, it's part of the air box. The foam is there to reduce the noise really... but of course it will eventually get old and fall off.. and then clog your intake ducting.
