Auto Transmission goes clunk in reverse! 200 1981

Hi everyone,
I have a 1981 244 GL with 165k miles on it. The 3 speed automatic transmission has started to have some trouble. It started when I was trying to back out of a parking space and the car wouldn't go. It felt like there was something under the wheels. I had it in reverse and it didn't move. I tried it in neutral and it didn't move either. I finally got it to move by putting it in reverse and giving it a little gas. When i did this it reversed very jerkily and then I tried going forward and then back to reverse and everything was fine.

I drove it the other day and from a stop light it made another clunk noise and jerked before accelerating. I am not really sure what the problem could be...maybe bad linkage? how do i check that? Thanks again!

Rob

Most likely the rubber bearing carrier and/or bearing itself in the driveshaft center support. Jack up the car and wiggle the driveshaft on both sides of the center support and see if it is loose in any way. There should be almost no play when shaking it.
