While looking for a used replacement rack and pinion for my 940 '91 (CAM rack), I was just told by the local junker that there is a big demand for these since they always crack at the aluminum casting.

Is this true? Is this a common weakness?

Had not heard that about CAM racks . Don't recall seeing one come thru the shop with cracked casting. But I am sure that it could happen. All four of my 740s' came with ZF racks on them and have had no problems except tierods on any of them. They all have original racks on them at 234K, 203K, 170K, 149K miles respectfuly. If CAM racks are rare up there, switch to a ZF. They are supposed to interchange. Only thing that might be different would be the hoses. Sure someone else here knows the whole story. Been reading the FAQ here for four years and I never have looked at the steering section 'cause never had problems in that area(yet)!later,rcs
