I recently noticed that the belts on my 1989 245 are showing some signs of wear and tear.
Ballpark, how much does it cost to have the belts replaced?
Thanks,
Rick

If you can do them yourself it's around $40,if you have it done at a shop it should cost about $100.The brickboard sponsors are a good place to buy new belts.
If your drive belts are worn chances are that your timing belt needs replacing, you can peek at that behind the black plastic cover.

thanks...
let's say the timing belt "needs it"... what am I looking at there? (cost-wise)
is this a major repair?

Cost wise it depends if your mechanic is competent enough and comfortable working on a volvo. A volvo dealer will charge probably 150-200$ CDN to do this. It is a major repair in the sense that they do have speciefied life span and can leave you stranded if it breaks. If your going to have it changed consider replacing the water pump as well.GOOD LUCK
