MegaSquirt 1800 1973

I went to the VCOA show in Olympia and talked to this young guy with a 242 that was really modified. I was looking at his injection system and started asking him questions. He said it was MegaSquirt. Now I read here in this forum about MegaSquirt but I am wondering, has anyone ever installed it into a B20 E of F engine? What does it take? How difficult would it be? What performance, reliability, and fuel economy advantages does it offer?

Ultrmegasquirt will be available in the next 6 months(?).
http://members.shaw.ca/megasquirt/UMS.htm

It will have wideband 02 functionality built in. I have a narrowband sensor installed with an A/F meter right now and trying to tune against it is folly. Looking into commerical standalone WB02 setups I have found that $500 is the minimum you will spend. UMS utilizes a VW sensor (LSU5) that costs about $30 on the internet. The signal processing for the sensor is built into the UMS unit and mixture data can be logged and even used for very accurate real-time closed-loop operation.

Another important (to me) feature of UMS is that the boards will have most of the components preinstalled (presoldered). I assembled one of the currently available MegaSquirt units with no previous soldering experience and zero knowledge of low-level electronics and hit a steep learning curve to say the least. This unit is still not installed on my car. Embarrased to say I am a little scared of the quality of my assembly work.

I remember when I first heard about MS. I thought it was too good to be true. So did the guys even on TBricks (the only nay sayer was doug, the guy you met at the meet, I was probably standing there with him). So despite what people said, I installed it on a turbo engine I modified and dropped in my 242GT. I was the first on the forums to run it, but not the first Volvo as someone else (jesse) did it a few weeks prior to my install and he walked me through it.

All I have to say is WOW. Megasquirt was by far the best mod I made to the car. The fuel milage increase was great, drivability also increased. With my maiden 2500Km road trip with it, I achieved 32mpg. The best part was I wasn't even trying to get good milage on that trip, I routenly hit 190Km/h, boosted up everyhill etc etc. My dad just sat in the passenger seat and tuned.

Now he is hung hoe for it. He has a 69 122S that he is building a big bore, ported and polished head, cammed, etc engine for, with of course Megasquirt. He is using Eric Reuters site as a guide. We also have a 69 145, but I think it will be getting a turbo engine with megasquirt, thats a few projects down the road.

IF you can get MS on your car, I'm sure you'll be happy with it. I'll warn you now, that tuning does take some time and patience. But in the end, you'll be happy.

I'll be installing megasquirt soon. I have the unit built, but i'm still collecting parts. It will install on a djet engine with minimal difficulty. I suggest looking through the megasquirt site and reading the threads on is yahoo group. Eric Reuter is one to talk to. I don't know if he uses this forum, but here is the link to his install.

Good Luck...I'll document my install and hopefully post it somewhere
