My dying 960 has a new lease on life (I hope)! I just got my 1992 wagon out of the shop for a total of $1,268.63.

That included a head gasket job for $704 of labor (11 hours) and $216 for parts (which included $90 to a machine shop to repair my cracked cylinder head). The total for the head gasket replacement job was $920.86.

AND I also had the rear main seal and the front transmission seal replaced (requiring removal of the transmission) and all fluids topped off. Labor for that part of the job was $288 (4.5 hours) and parts were $46.60, for a total of $334.60.

I feel like I did all right--the repairs saved my car and allowed me to put off buying something newer. Do these costs sound okay to other 960 owners?

that is a big hit but doesn't sound bad considering the 960 is rolling again.

Would have replaced oil and filter and the coolant--, and if the Atf oil smells only a little burnt, then that as well ( at least, that's what we used to do when puting in that kind of an effort as a standard procedure)

Sounds good to me, around here the dealers are charging about 95.00 per hour and my independent is charging 70.00 bucks.

Where was the crack on the head and how was it repaired? Did the car ever overheat?

As I recall, number 3 spark plug hole was filling with oil from the cyl head sections.
