Looking at a 700 series 700

I am looking at a 1987 700 series sedan. Is there any issues with these cars, (like the imfamous AC evaporator on the 850 that I got suckered for) that I take into consideration.

I currently have a 90 850GLT and love it, but I am unable to drive the standard any more with needing hip surgery.

Thanks.

Tony!!!

check the breather pipes on the flame trap are clear (see faq) then remove them at teh place where they enter the inlet tract and check of ANY and i mean ANY oil....if you find it....walk away (just dont ask me how i know....)

it must must must have a full service history there is a lot of nonsense talked about bricks...you cannot abuse them and expect them to live for ever, if you take care of them they will live a long time but abuse them and pay the (large!) price...

basically read the faq then go over the car and see what you can find...i would START by pulling the flame trap on the basis that a clean flame trap is a sign of a well maintained volvo (and most shops/indi mechs/home mechs) who dont know volvo's wont clean/repalace them - any one who does know them does - religiously!)

Also I would check for any signs of seal leaks (good sign that he flame trap HAS been blocked) also rear main leaks (bloody expensive!)

basically other than that i would look for a car that looks like it has been cared for...if it looks like it hasnt wana bet (and you are betting!) that the maintenance hasnt been kept up???

check the FAQ.. 700

They have a great guide to buying a used 700/900 series..I own two and that damn FAQ is like a bible when it comes to what can go wrong or what to look for.

They really are great cars, once the bugs(if any) are worked out. They make most newer vehicles look like hypochondriac patients...

P.S. I would never have known you don't speak perfect english from your post...reads fine to me!

Yes, the wiring sucked. The insulation will crumble in your hands.

I would buy a 88B or a 89 instead. New type of fuelinjection system with onboard diagnostics.

Check for rust. Rust is what kills these cars - at least here in sweden since they use salt on the roads to melt the ice.

Actually no really big errors on these models. I would say that 240/740/940 is a lot better than the modern cars when it comes to quality.

;-) thanks! Still a bit limited by the words i know...

Anyway, i learned from another thread that maybe it was only on some markets that diagnostics was introduced in later models 1988 and in all 1989.

Check for the B230F engine, at least in the swedish markets it has LH Jetronic with diagnostics.
